E-
MAIL SECURITY THREAT CHALLENGED BY ‘FORTRESS MAIL’
Urgent steps are required to improve our internet security warns MP Richard Allen earlier this year http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2579055.stm.
Most
organisations have a firewall that protects their inbound e-mail
system from a virus, but not interception.
As a nation, over 3 billion business emails are sent each year and this
trend looks set to grow. With so much sensitive correspondence being transmitted
every day, more than ever, attention needs to be paid to issues of security. Richard
Allen MP said ‘We need some form of encryption that everybody can share,
whether it is local authorities, private citizens or the government.
We are adjusting to using e-mail and there are still some serious
weaknesses in the system”. A Birmingham
based company has developed software that will protect e-mail
against hackers who intercept electronic post. Developed by
expert , Dr. David Reynolds , ‘Fortress Mail' is easily installed
on any computer. The software
utilises some of the most advanced encryption algorithms available , making
Fortress protected email virtually impenetrable.
Tony
King, a partner in developers , Silicon Village said; “
I saw that there was a need to protect sensitive email, whether it was in
the Medical, Legal, Media or the general business arena. There was nothing like
our software available, something that is quick, easy to use, effective and
inexpensive. Awarness of anti-virus protection is high generally , but
little or nothing is being done to protect sensitive information from
interception. Fortress is the equivalent of putting your message in a cast-iron
welded-shut envelope”. The NHS have been quick to put the software to trial for it's Pathology messaging service. Fortress Mail is now being trialled by a number of different agencies and business, including Solicitors, The Police , DHSS anti-fraud units, Social Services .Insurance Companies, Banks and Financial Institutions.
Silicon Village is also in final testing of Fortress SMS, an AES standard SMS text-encryption programme for mobile phones and PDA's.
